The Dangers of Illegal E-BikesBBC Radio Oxford Interview with John Clark

AME 14.08.25

Last week, Velospeed’s John Clark was interviewed on BBC Radio Oxford to discuss a growing and worrying problem: the rise of illegal electric bikes on UK roads – and pavements!

John featured on Sophie Law’s programme, alongside writer Peter Hitchens, to discuss the recent increase in illegal electric bikes seized by Thames Valley Police.

While electric bikes are an increasingly popular and sustainable way to travel, not all e-bikes being used today are safe – or even legal. John spoke to Sophie about the risks these illegal machines pose to riders, pedestrians, and other road users.

The Law on Electric Bike Speeds

In the UK, electric bike regulations are clear:

  • Motor assistance must cut out at 15.5mph (25km/h).
  • The motor’s maximum power output must not exceed 250 watts.
  • Riders must be at least 14 years old.

These rules ensure that e-bikes remain as safe, stable, and suitable as standard bicycles for cycle paths, public roads, and shared spaces.

The Problem With Illegal E-Bikes

Some e-bikes are being illegally modified to bypass these limits. In extreme cases, these altered bikes can reach speeds of up to 70mph – effectively making them motorbikes without the required licensing, insurance, or safety features. The increased power can also cause the e-bike to catch fire, an additional safety hazard.

John emphasised that the e-bike industry is taking steps to battle this growing problem.

Velospeed’s Commitment to Safe, Legal E-Bikes
